Fish & Chips and Vegan Wellington at The Cotswold Outpost

Our visit to The Cotswold Outpost in Burford was a fantastic experience. This charming cafe, conveniently located just off the A40, is the perfect rest stop for those exploring the Cotswolds, whether you’re passing on your way to or from Burford (which is just a minute down the road), Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold, or further afield.

The Cotswold Outpost has a warm and inviting atmosphere, enhanced by stunning views of the surrounding countryside. We visited for lunch on a drizzly June day, and checking out their menu was a challenge… what to choose? They have extensive all-day breakfast options, tempting sandwiches, delectable cakes, and a selection of classic British dishes like bangers and mash and cottage pie.

We opted for the fish and chips and the vegan Wellington. The fish and chips were a true standout, a great, big portion of perfectly crispy batter encasing flaky fish, accompanied by perfectly cooked chips. The vegan Wellington stole the show, though. Rich in flavour and beautifully presented, it was by far the best Wellington we’d ever had,and we’ve had a fair few.

The Cotswold Outpost clearly prioritises local sourcing. Their coffee is sourced from the renowned Stow Town Coffee Roastery, eggs are supplied by the nearby Cacklebean Farm, and the menu showcases the freshest seasonal produce from the region. The chef’s dedication to using the best of the Cotswolds is evident in every dish.

Following our meal, we couldn’t resist indulging in a nostalgic treat: a bottle of fresh milk from the on-site vending machine, sourced directly from Cotswold Organic Dairy Farm. The addition of homemade chocolate flavouring from the honesty box provided the perfect post-lunch indulgence.

The Cotswold Outpost is more than just a cafe; it’s a destination. With its stunning views, friendly service, and commitment to showcasing the best of local produce, it’s a must-visit for anyone exploring this beautiful region.

An extraordinary dining experience at the Greenway

Our dinner at The Garden Room at The Greenway Hotel was an unforgettable culinary journey. From the moment we stepped into the fabulous space that is the hotel’s main restaurant, we loved the elegant decor as well as the refined and inviting ambience. It was the perfect setting for what was going to be a perfect evening.

Impeccable service

The service was impeccable throughout the entire meal. The staff were incredibly attentive and friendly, anticipating our needs and ensuring we felt comfortable and well-cared for. We were particularly impressed by the chef’s dedication to accommodating our dietary requirements.

While the menu offered a tempting array of dishes, the chef graciously created bespoke vegan and vegetarian options for us, demonstrating a true commitment to personalised dining experiences.

Crusty sourdough and a lentil cigar

The culinary artistry on display was truly remarkable. We began with a delightful amuse-bouche of lentil cigars, a surprising and incredibly flavourful start to the meal. The sourdough bread served alongside was fresh and crusty, accompanied by a trio of accompaniments: butter, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar, adding a touch of simplicity to the refined setting.

An off-menu masterpiece

For starters, we opted for the mushroom dish, a classic that was executed with finesse, and a truly special treat in the beautifully presented beetroot terrine, created especially by the chef for us. This off-menu masterpiece was a visual and gustatory delight, a highlight of the evening.

Fine dining comfort food

For the main course, we both enjoyed the mushroom risotto. It was flavoursome, creamy and rich, light and satisfying. This was true fine-dining comfort food at its best.

To conclude the culinary adventure of this lovely evening, we had the decadent chocolate tarts with raspberry sorbet. Once again, the chef had graciously prepared a vegan version of this dessert, demonstrating a remarkable attention to detail. The rich, dark chocolate perfectly complemented the tartness of the sorbet, creating a harmonious blend of flavours that lingered long after the final bite. This dessert was another highlight of the evening, one to remember.

A truly unforgettable evening

The evening concluded with expertly brewed coffees and a selection of delightful after-dinner chocolates and jellies. Every dish, from the amuse-bouche to the final dessert, was a masterpiece of culinary artistry.

Our dining experience at The Garden Room was extraordinary. The combination of elegant ambience, impeccable service, and exceptional cuisine created an unforgettable evening. We highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a truly memorable fine-dining experience.
